"World Series Rodeo held at New York City's Madison Square Gardens, 17 to 31October 1931. New York's World Series Rodeo was one of the four biggest rodeos on the continent, the other three having been held at Calgary, Pendleton and Cheyenne. Pete Knight won the bucking championship at New York that year; the four 'big rodeo' winners of 1931 (to include Pendleton Champion Frank Studnick, Cheyenne Champion Earl Thode and Calgary Stampede Champion Gene Ross) were invited to an exclusive 'World's Champion' ride-off between the four most formidable riders in North America, held at Reno, Nevada on 24 June 1932. Former World Heavyweight Boxing Champion Jack Dempsey sponsored the award for the 'Ride of Champions' at Reno...the Dempsey Trophy. Two legendary 'unridable' bucking horses, "Cannonball" and "Steamboat", were brought to Reno for the contest. Pete Knight won the World's title at Reno and captured the Dempsey Trophy, with his riding prowess being successfully contested against Ross, Thode and Studnick. In the Madison Square Gardens 1931 photo, Pete Knight appears in the halo of light below center field, riding a 'paint' horse, with an "Alberta" banner in hand."
